There is a lot of marketing jargon in holistic health. In our efforts to get a better understanding of the terms, we came across Dr. Anthony, a holistic surgeon who provided a clear explanation of whether collagen supplements actually work.
" I was at Whole Foods just the other day and I saw a big display of collagen supplements which proves collagen is mainstream now. This is a hot topic in holistic health. We're going to talk about collagen supplements and answer this question "do collagen supplements work".
Due to the hype collagen supplements can be quite costly, how do you know that it's worth your money? I'm going to answer that question for you using field science. Collagen is the main protein that makes up about 75-80% of our skin, serving as its building block. As we age, our skin thins, loses elasticity, and becomes less smooth due to the loss of collagen. This explains why younger skin appears more toned and elastic. While there are other proteins like elastin and hyaluronic acid, collagen is the largest component of the skin.
What about collagen creams?
If you have lost collagen in your skin and want to improve its appearance and thickness using a collagen cream, you may be disappointed. Collagen molecules in the creams are too large to penetrate the outer surface of your skin and mostly remain on its surface. A nice collagen cream can act as a great moisturizer, but it will not work hard to give you a glow-from-within look.
What do the studies say about collagen supplements, do having collagen supplements result in better skin? There was a study from the University of Kiel in Germany. This is a good randomized trial study that found a statistically significant improvement in skin elasticity after four and eight weeks of taking a collagen supplement. So what they did basically is they took people who were taking a collagen supplement and others who were taking a placebo and they found that the skin elasticity of those people taking the supplement with significantly better after both 4 & 8 weeks.
There's another study by the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, and this study found that taking collagen supplements increases the hydration and the thickness of the skin. So once again this answers the question if ingesting collagen can cause the collagen in your skin to get firmer and plumper the answer from this study is YES!
